Mark Brennan, Kevin Nolan, Morgan Carparelli and Michael O'Reilly win national radio award.

Beat 102-103's 'Faking It' competition took the bronze prize at this year's PPI (Phonographic Performance Ireland) National Radio Awards.

'Faking It' was a series of bogus ads mixed in amongst the regular commercials on April 1st of 2010, which listeners were challenged to spot. The fake ads were conceived, written, recorded and produced by students and staff from BSc (Hons) Entertainment Systems at WIT. This achievement has in no small part been brought about by the strong links between WIT and Beat 102-103/WLR and the assistance the radio stations provided in producing the audio pieces.

It is important to note that these are professional awards - there is no ‘student’ category. The work produced from BSc Entertainment Systems and broadcast by Beat was being judged against professionally-produced programming from the likes of Newstalk, BBC Ulster, Today FM, RTE and all the local and regional stations in Ireland.

The silver and gold awards were taken by RTE1's Morning Ireland 25th Anniversary programme and Today FM's 'Shave or Dye' campaign.

“When one considers the balance of resources, this is a remarkable achievement and testament to the quality and creativity of the audio material produced at WIT,” said Gabrielle Cummins, CEO/Programme Controller with Beat 102-103 as she paid tribute to the team for their success.

The four students involved in ‘Faking It’ are Mark Brennan, Morgan Carparelli, Kevin Nolan and Michael O'Reilly, and the project was overseen by Robert O'Connor from the Department of Computing, Maths & Physics at WIT.
